As one of our art projects, we took out fingerprint art books from the library. I got an inkpad and the kids followed the directions in the books. I highly recommend these books. It was so much fun. They reinforce reading, following directions, and incorporated art! The kids had a blast making them. It was a really easy and fun afternoon activity that they wanted to do several times before taking the books back. They are definitely great books to look for at your local library or of course on amazon.
We did farm animals, ocean animals, and insects. The books showed you how to use different parts of your fingers to make different size and shaped fingerprints. We used a pen to draw on the outside but I would recommend getting a good thin tipped marker. That was the one thing I wish we had to make this go a little smoother. We had three different colored ink pads, red, green, and silver. The silver was the hardest to draw on top over. For a 5 and 6 year old, these turned out pretty good and they were fairly independent with it.
